Sitting is the new smoking — but is it really that bad?
Most of us spend our days sitting — at the desk, in the car, during meals, and while binge-watching shows. But what if this seemingly harmless habit is slowly harming your health?
Studies now show that sitting for more than 8 hours a day — even if you exercise — increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and even premature death.
A 2019 study in The Lancet found that Indian adults spend nearly 6+ hours per day sitting, especially in urban areas.
You don’t have to quit your job — just break the pattern!
💡 Just 2–3 minutes of light movement every 30 minutes can cancel out many of the negative effects of sitting.
As a doctor, I’ve seen patients in their 30s coming in with early-onset hypertension, fatty liver, and back issues — with no other cause except sedentary life. Your office chair could be the hidden culprit.
If you’re sitting and reading this, take a moment to stand up, stretch, and move around. Your body (and brain) will thank you.
