Dengue Prevention 101: Not Just About Mosquitoes
```
🦟 Dengue is rising in Indian cities — but are we doing enough to prevent it?
Every monsoon, dengue fever cases surge across India. People rush to hospitals with high fever, low platelets, and fear. Yet, much of this suffering is avoidable — because dengue is preventable, and the steps go beyond just “mosquito coils” or “nets”.
Let’s understand how dengue really spreads — and what you can do to protect your family this season.
🦠 What Causes Dengue?
Dengue is caused by the dengue virus, transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
Unlike malaria mosquitoes, Aedes:
- Bites during the day (especially early morning and late afternoon)
- Breeds in clean water, not dirty drains
- Can breed in tiny spots: bottle caps, old tyres, planters, open buckets
That’s why even clean-looking homes can be dengue hotspots.
🧪 Early Symptoms to Watch For
- High-grade fever (often sudden onset)
- Severe headache, behind the eyes
- Joint and muscle pain (“breakbone fever”)
- Nausea, vomiting
- Skin rash (after 3–5 days)
- Bleeding (in severe cases — gums, nose, bruises)
⚠️ Platelet count dropping is a late sign, not the first warning.
✅ Dengue Prevention Checklist (Home & Family)
🏠 At Home:
- Empty and scrub all water containers weekly — even flower pots and AC trays
- Keep overhead tanks and buckets tightly covered
- Change pet water bowls daily
- Use mosquito nets during daytime naps (not just at night)
- Install mosquito screens on windows, especially during monsoon
👚 On the Body:
- Wear full sleeves and full pants during outbreak season
- Use mosquito repellent creams on exposed skin (esp. kids)
🏥 In the Community:
- Report stagnant water to authorities
- Spread awareness — most dengue starts inside homes
- Support fogging drives — they kill adult mosquitoes but don’t prevent breeding
🧠 Myths That Hurt Prevention
- ❌ “My house is clean, so we’re safe.”
✅ Even clean water in a bottle cap can breed Aedes in 7–10 days.
- ❌ “It only bites at night.”
✅ Aedes bites in daylight — especially 6–9 AM & 4–6 PM.
- ❌ “One mosquito coil is enough.”
✅ Coils may reduce bites but don’t kill larvae. Breeding continues.
👨⚕️ Doctor’s Note
Each year, I meet patients who say, “Doctor, we were careful — we used GoodKnight!”
But prevention isn’t just about repellents. It’s about cutting the mosquito life cycle at the root — in water collection spots.
If even one neighbour isn’t following precautions, entire colonies can become hotspots.
💬 Final Word
Dengue is not a monsoon curse. It’s a man-made outbreak, born from neglect.
Protecting your family begins with simple, consistent habits:
- Cover, empty, scrub water containers weekly
- Dress smart, use repellents
- Support your community’s fight against mosquitoes
Small actions. Big impact.
